Cruise Night

It's Cruise Night at the Hot Rod Whataburger, People!

I'm often asked what inspires me, where the stories come from.  Honestly, I couldn't tell you.  What I do know, however, is this:  Inspiration doesn't come while sitting on the blue sofa with the laptop.  I think you have to get out and live.

So, on the second Thursday of every month, my son and I hang out at the Hot Rod Whataburger.  Great cars.  Great folks.  Great milkshakes.  If it's First Monday, I'm at the flea market.  On a gray day, you might find me at the old Jefferson cemetery -- reading gravestones, journaling.  A rodeo?  I'm there.  A family reunion?  Count me in.  Live music?  Anywhere, anytime.

For me, a story has to be rich in detail.  I don't know where else to get the details -- sights, sounds, smells -- but to go out and live them.   I do believe in what Richard Peck refers to as a**glue -- sitting alone with Louise the Laptop.  Obviously, words don't write themselves.  However, I find the flow much better when I'm full of ideas.

I'm off to a BBQ joint in the piney woods, but  I'd love to hear from you guys.  What inspires you?
